Aviation Professionals

Speak clearly. Fly further.

ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements are mandatory for pilots and ATCs operating internationally. Our SLPs work with aviation professionals to address the pronunciation and fluency components of the assessment.

Why ICAO Language Proficiency matters

Under Annex 1 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, pilots and air traffic controllers must demonstrate a minimum of ICAO Level 4 (Operational) English proficiency to work in international operations. This requirement was introduced after aviation incidents where miscommunication contributed to safety failures.

Level 4 requires reassessment every three years. Level 5 extends that to six years. Level 6 grants lifetime validity. For many aviation professionals, reaching and maintaining the required level is a career necessity — and pronunciation and fluency are often the components that are most difficult to improve without targeted support.

Accent modification is designed to address precisely those components. It does not replace aviation English training, which covers radiotelephony phraseology and technical vocabulary. But for pilots and ATCs whose pronunciation or fluency are the limiting factors in their ICAO rating, working with a licensed SLP can be an effective preparation strategy.

The Assessment

The six ICAO proficiency components

Pronunciation

Targeted by accent modification

How clearly you produce the sounds of English — individual phonemes, word stress, and intonation. Directly targeted by accent modification.

Structure

Grammar and sentence construction. Assessed on accuracy and complexity under pressure.

Vocabulary

Range and accuracy of word choices, including ability to paraphrase when the exact term isn't available.

Fluency

Targeted by accent modification

How smoothly and naturally you produce connected speech, especially under time pressure. Directly supported by accent modification.

Comprehension

Ability to understand spoken English in routine and non-routine aviation contexts.

Interactions

Managing exchanges — turn-taking, clarifying, confirming, and repairing misunderstandings.

Aviation FAQ

What is ICAO Level 4 English proficiency?

ICAO Level 4 (Operational) is the minimum English proficiency standard required for pilots and air traffic controllers operating internationally. It is assessed across six components: pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and interactions. Level 4 requires reassessment every 3 years.

Can accent modification help me with the ICAO assessment?

Accent modification directly addresses the pronunciation and fluency components of the ICAO assessment. A licensed SLP can work with you on specific phonemes, stress patterns, and rhythm to improve clarity. Accent modification does not replace aviation English training, which covers vocabulary and phraseology.

How many sessions do aviation clients typically need?

The number of sessions varies depending on individual starting points and goals. Many aviation clients work through the 12-session Clarity Program or the 20-session Clarity Intensive. A free discovery call can help you understand the options, and once you begin a program, a comprehensive assessment determines the specific scope of work.

Do you work with pilots from all language backgrounds?

Yes. Our SLPs are trained to work with speakers from any first-language background. Each program is built around the specific phonological and prosodic features that are most relevant to your accent and your assessment goals.

How are sessions delivered for aviation clients?

All sessions are delivered via secure video call, making the service accessible to pilots and aviation professionals anywhere in the world. Sessions are typically 50 minutes. Flexible scheduling accommodates irregular flying schedules.
